Journal for Project #4

I thought that this was a fun project to do. I really enjoyed the finding works of art part, it was a very interesting aspect. I was really happy with the fact that we were able to select our own theme for this project and I believe that this made the project more enjoyable than say just giving us a few themes to choose from. While looking for art work for exhibit I came across a bunch of different type of sports art. I was torn between choosing famous athletes and just random sports pieces so I decided to include a little bit of both. Overall I thought this by far was one of the more entertaining projects that I have done in collage and I think it is because I had control over the entire situation and was able to pick something fun. I choose the sports theme because I am an avid sports fan, I enjoy watching pretty much any sport either on TV or live. I had a really fun experience with this project and would recommend you do it again for future classes.

Module 13 and 14 videos

1. In the west coast pop art video I learned that it was influenced by comic books, B-movies, rock n roll, surfing, hot rods, and Cold War imagery. In the Tate Approach video I learned about the new method that utilized theme based museum sections. In the Native American video I learned about how more than 10,000 Native Americans have been unearthed throughout the US and there is a great debate over this being scientific research or desecration of their culture. In the Great Museum video I learned about the life of Philippe de Montebello and his impact of being the Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was able to acquire more than 84,000 works of art during his 31 years of service.

2. Yes these videos relate to the project because they are able to give you an idea of what the project wants you to do. The most helpful video was the Great Museum video because it shows you how hard it is to put on an exhibit.

3. I thought that all of the films were too long, but they did give me some ideas for my project so I think they were helpful in that way.

Module 12 videos

1. The reason I selected the Andy Warhol and photography videos is because they seemed the most interesting to me.

2. In the Warhol video I learned about the life of Andy Warhol and how he impacted the pop art movement with his style of painting. Something interesting that I learned in this video was that Warhol was also a journalist, and I thought that was very interesting. In the photography video I learned about David Hockney and his develpoment of using photos in his collages. This video goes through how Hockney first started doing photography and goes through his collection of art.

3. I thought the videos tied into the readings decently by giving more information about Andy Warhol.

4. I thought they Warhol video was interesting and it was to long, but I was bored with the Hockney because it was dry at sometimes and I found it was too long. The films gave more background information on the artists and gave more images of their work.

Module 11 videos

1. The reason that I selected Matisse and Picasso and the Expressionism films is because they seemed interesting to me.

2. In the Matisse and Picasso video I learned about the lives of the two artists and how they both used their creativity in their own unique way. The videos also interviewed the children of these two artist and they give some insight on how Picasso felt about Matisse and vice versa. In the Expressionism film it talked about the different types of expressionism and that color was the main driving force behind this new type of art. Expressionism broke the normal type of art by having art looking unusual and not the typical painting or sculpture.

3. The films added more depth to the reading but I felt overwhelmed with all of the information that I was given.

4. I thought that the films were way to long and most of the time they were very boring and I had a hard time staying focused. The films added depth to the readings by giving many examples of expressionism and going deeper into the lives of Matisse and Picasso.
